THE RED PORSCHE WAS speeding east on the Interborough Parkway. Bob Lac was talking on the cellular telephone. "Cut it. Cut losses. Break it off and forget it."

The Porsche had been damaged when it sideswiped the van. The driver could still steer, but he could make no sharp left turns. When he tried, the left front tire rubbed torn metal.

"Cops," muttered the driver.

An NYPD blue-and-white that had been sitting on an exit ramp screamed after them. Lac turned around and saw the angry flashing lights.

He grabbed a sawed-off automatic shotgun from the black seat, stood up, thrusting his head and shoulders out through the open top of the car, and pointed the shotgun at the police car. The police driver saw what was coming and jammed on his brakes, but he was too late. Lac pulled the trigger twice, and a storm of buckshot dissolved the windshield of the police car and shredded the driver's face with glass and lead.

The blue-and-white hit the concrete center divider, glanced off, leaving a wheel behind, and turned around twice before it skidded from the pavement and into a retaining wall to the right.

"Off the parkway!" Lac yelled at the driver of the Porsche. "This car's hot!"

A few minutes later the two Vietnamese walked casually into a shopping center—two well-dressed men in dark suits and straw hats, carrying briefcases and looking like the kind of young men who were engaged in selling insurance policies, stocks or real estate. A few minutes later they found an unlocked station wagon with the keys in it, and they drove it back the way they had come, passing the wrecked police car and the three emergency vehicles around it, and on back to Manhattan.
