The Present

âKaty, I never knew that living in your Black Stables suite could be so nice. Here you have a mini apartment with a small kitchen and that beautiful round table by the window so we can sit drinking our coffee or tea while watching our Bitterroots in the background. I donât know where you found that beautiful lamp. Just touching it changes the brightness of the bulbs. Iâve never seen one like it but it certainly is homey.â
âThatâs not all you like, Sean, the king-size bed seemed to fit you perfectly. If I didnât know better, I would say itâs the first time youâve ever slept in a king-size bed. You were certainly lost last night. You were sleeping near the very edge and I was on the other side of the bed and you called me in your sleep wondering where I was. Being a nice quiet lady, I came over to your side to silence your bad feelings. After you woke up a little, the feelings were pretty dang good.â
âItâs a little past six so I think I better shower and get dressed. Jim and Stacy are supposed to be bringing the new hand by. Katy, we also need to think about hiring someone as a housekeeper. Iâm not sure if Sky would want to do it or maybe she knows someone.â
âThatâs a good idea. Iâll talk to Sky this morning after I straighten up the mess we made last night. Softly never did say if she wanted to live in Aprilâs apartment after we get things cleared out. She may be funny about staying there because thatâs where April passed away. Weâve got a lot going on right now so Iâll hold up my end of the bargain. I hope the new hand works out well because we need someone to help Jim.â
Mike finished dressing, spent a little extra time saying goodbye to Katy, and walked out towards the kitchen. He heard Jim and Stacy bickering back and forth about something. As he walked in the kitchen he saw a pleasant man around six feet tall dressed in what used to be some kind of green uniform. His rugged appearance and alert stature was that of a man who was used to being in charge in any element, especially outdoors. It was obvious because he had an old 1911 .45 caliber cock and lock holstered on the right side. He was tall and straight with neatly cut hair and steel blue eyes that seemed to look everywhere. He was about three days into needing a shave but it fit his persona perfectly. He probably would fit the bill seamlessly as long as he got along with Jim and Stacy. About the time that Mike walked into the kitchen, Jim and Stacy stopped talking. Sky was busy making coffee and getting a little breakfast together for the men. âGood morning, Mike, how was your first night under a real roof,â asked Jim as he walked up to meet him?
âIt was a lot better than youâll ever know.
