CHAPTER 2

The dining hall was busy the next afternoon; Kate quickly surveyed the place from the huge entry doors to make sure the cake tables had been set up according to plan.

“Already checked, Sugar. They’re right where they’re supposed to be.” Lachlan touched her back as he leaned over her shoulder and looked over the crowd. The sensation sent chills up her spine. This feeling, she expected, because it happened every time he touched her. This time, though, he left his hand on her back while they looked around the room and this made her ears ring.

“They’re already eating,” Kate whispered. “I thought dinner was supposed to be, you know…at dinner time.”

“Oh no,” he laughed. “Fancy people eat earlier than the peasants. What’s going on over there?” Lachlan pointed in front of Kate and turned her face toward the front corner of the room. The delicate touch of his hand on her chin felt sweet and made her knees wobble a bit.

In the front corner sat Bertie Florsheim, a well-known man in town, generally disliked by a number of people. Not the least of which was his own daughter, Rachel Bloomingdale. A lifetime ago, Bertie left Rachel for dead as a young girl. Rachel, of course, never got over it. She hated her father, and so did her husband, Ian Bloomingdale.

About the only thing that Bertie had going for him, other than a full head of hair, was his fortune. He was very wealthy, and Rachel stood to inherit a tidy sum upon his death. A death, she always fantasized, that would come sooner rather than later. Everyone in town knew that Bertie was only here to make amends for Rachel’s tumultuous childhood, and he did a piss-poor job of trying to hide it. He would attend this evening’s function in order to donate a large amount of money to his daughter and her husband’s ministry foundation, Helping Hands. It was probably the only reason he was allowed in the door.

It appeared that Bertie and his son-in-law were arguing about something, and Ian Bloomingdale was perched delicately on the edge of this seat, seemingly ready to deck his father-in-law. Kate rolled her eyes and pushed Lachlan out into the foyer.

“Let’s get the cupcakes in here. We can use the side door.”

Kate’s assistant, Selena Fox, bustled in the front entrance just in time to help unload, though Kate knew that would never happen. The girl, a gorgeous young woman in her early twenties, pranced toward them in her black pumps and perfect hair. Her eyes remained fixed on Lachlan, who clearly admired her attention to detail in getting ready before the function. No doubt it was done only to impress him. The truth was, Lachlan could barely stand Selena’s personality, but he enjoyed how it bothered Kate when he paid attention to her, so he made a point to say how nice she looked. Kate rolled her eyes and walked toward the door. She heard Lachlan chuckle behind her.

“What…I would have said your hair looked nice too if you’d done anything different with it.
