Oprah Winfrey, probably one of the world’s most recognizable names, joined the fight.

Winfrey wrote, “Today would’ve been Breonna Taylor’s 27th birthday. But she’s not here to celebrate, because shortly after midnight on March 13 Louisville police entered her apartment unannounced [FALSE]—and after a brief confrontation with her boyfriend [I think she meant when he shot a police officer], shot her eight times. The officers have not been fired or charged.”

Winfrey continued by remembering Taylor as an “award-winning EMT” [she was only an EMT for five months with no awards] who “doesn’t even get to celebrate her birthday.”5 While I was disgusted, I did have to consider the source. This is the same person who had recently said during her show, “There are white people who are not as powerful as the system of white people—the caste system that’s been put in place. But they still, no matter where they are on the rung or ladder of success, they still have their whiteness.” Oprah then said that white people have a “leg up” and added, “You still have your whiteness. That’s what the term ‘white privilege’ is. It means that whiteness still gives you an advantage.”6 This statement was true in the days of slavery and Jim Crow, but this was 2020 and came from a woman of color who had a horrendous upbringing at the hands of her own but managed to succeed. She overcame her challenges by becoming a billionaire with the same opportunities we are all afforded. So, her opinion means nothing to me, but her far-reaching influence is troubling because we live in a world of reality with real consequences. Radicals will take these lies and contorted truths and act out in unpredictable ways.

In August, an article by CNN was headlined, “Oprah’s O Magazine puts up billboards all over Louisville demanding action in the Breonna Taylor case.”7 In fact, twenty-six billboards were placed all around Louisville and paid for by O, The Oprah Magazine.
