But we may not need all those printed parts to keep our bodies in perfect working order.

Ray Kurzweil is certain that computing power will eventually allow us to scan and upload our brains. This may be preferable to keeping our bodies in line. An uploaded brain allows us to download however we choose. What body would you like? We may choose a body that can fly. We may shape-shift, just as so many stories have told us we could. We may prefer to be out of the body for a while. That’s not so strange. How often have you lain down, maybe for an hour in the sun, put your body to rest while your mind roamed wherever it wanted?

When we read, when we go to the theatre, when we watch a movie, when we dream, we park our bodies and live in our minds.

The poet Andrew Marvell (1621–1678) put it like this in his poem ‘The Garden’:

Meanwhile the mind, from pleasure less,

Withdraws into its happiness;

The mind, that ocean where each kind

Does straight its own resemblance find,

Yet it creates, transcending these,

Far other worlds, and other seas;

Annihilating all that’s made

To a green thought in a green shade.
