43. Learn Counting Levels

Card-counting systems are also ranked by levels, which refers to the highest value assigned to the cards:

• Level 1 strategies. These are the most popular and easiest to use.

• These strategies assign point values of .1, 0, or +1.

• Level 2 strategies. They’re more efficient and more accurate, but efficiency and accuracy come with greater difficulty and a higher margin for error. These systems assign point values of .2, .1, 0, +1, and +2 to various cards.

• Level 3 strategies. These are even more efficient and more accurate than Level 2, which makes them harder to learn and easier to make errors.

Level 4 and 5 strategies also exist, but most experts feel they’re not worth the time and effort to learn, as they’re extremely complex and carry a high margin of error.
