As a boy, my older brother Howard was always hard to pin down. He could be building a fort in the backyard, riding his minibike down the block, racing his go-cart at the school lot, or digging a tunnel in the field next door. That he managed to come home in one piece was no doubt a tribute to providence.

Age and marriage have mellowed most of us. Not Howard. He still is always on the go, almost impossible to keep track of. A competitive sailor, he participates in races all over the world. And when he’s not sailing, he could easily be skiing in Canada or surfing in the South Pacific or at home in California. “Where’s Howard?” is a frequent familial inquiry. My mom once told me that she never could go to bed at night until she pictured where all of us were—then prayed. Howard must be a continual challenge to her imaginative skills.

Then last year he was on the crew of Steve Fossett’s sailboat Play Station Two, attempting a new record for circling the British Isles. Suddenly we all knew exactly where Howard was. We could log on to the Internet and watch his progress. The Web site was so precise it showed the boat every step of the four-day journey, with constant updates on the weather. We watched during the squalls, the jibes, the torturous hours when they were becalmed in the Irish Sea. And the thrilling finale when they picked up thirty-knot winds that brought them into Southampton with a new world’s record.

“It must be our prayers that brought you around,” I e-mailed him.

“It had to be something,” he e-mailed back.
