LESSON 44

GET INVOLVED IN THE COMMUNITY

Contributed by Caroline Petrone, University of South Carolina, Class of 2017

Your college experience should go well beyond your classes and your campus. Your college or university is most likely a critical part of a larger community so look beyond campus to the community where your school is located and look for ways to get involved. At many colleges, the athletic department and teams have community-based programs where student-athletes volunteer their time in the community throughout the academic year. You don’t need to be an athlete to invest some of your time in the community. There are most likely charitable events you can support or even help manage and produce. There are small businesses and non-profits that would love to have college students serve as interns where you can gain real-world experience that goes on your resume. Once you have settled onto campus and figured your way around, branch out a bit further and discover the local community. There is a world of opportunity just a few steps from your dorm room where your involvement in the community will amplify your college experience.
