tip 61. Ride Shorter on a Puller

Many event horses take a keen interest in their work, and pull during conditioning sessions and competitions. It is counterintuitive at first, but the more your horse pulls, the shorter you need to ride in order to control him. It is easier to hold your horse when you can keep your hands at the level of his withers and put your weight lower in your hips and farther back behind the saddle. When riding with longer stirrups, the temptation to raise your hands, stand up, and put your weight directly against your horse is irresistible. Once you confront your horse’s weight directly with your own, you will lose the struggle for control.
