When the Shit Hits the Fan

10 GREAT MOMENTS IN CREATIVE DEFECATION

1929: While fellow surrealists Max Ernst and René Magritte are painting allusive images of the psyche, the Spanish artist Salvador Dali depicts people taking a shit. Dali’s ardor for ordure began when he was very young; he liked to introduce an element of surprise into his mother’s daily chores by hiding his turds in unexpected places around the house.

1961: Italian artist Piero Manzoni, the Godfather of poop-based art, exhibits a series of ninety one-ounce cans containing his own excrement, titled Artist’s Shit, allegedly in response to a remark by his father, who told him, “Piero, your work is shit.” In June 2002, the Tate Gallery in London announced it had purchased tin No. 4 of Manzoni Jr.’s feces for about $38,000. In October 2008 tin No. 83 was offered for sale at Sotheby’s, with a not-to-be-sniffed-at estimate of $80,000–$110,000.
