2 Be clear on when and where

Psychologist Peter Gollwitzer discovered that if we create a clear plan for where and when we will take action, we are much more likely to do what we intended, especially for more challenging goals or actions. For example, in one study, just before the Christmas holidays, he asked students to identify two goals they wanted to complete during the upcoming break – one easy and one difficult (examples included: writing a seminar paper, settling a family conflict or participating in sports). He asked half the students to identify specifically when and where they’d actually work on each of their goals – two-thirds of this group actually reached their difficult goals, whereas only a quarter of those who hadn’t set when–where intentions did so.

In a similar study, he set two groups of students the task of writing an essay on what they did on Christmas Eve no more than forty-eight hours after the day. But only one group was required to identify specifically when and where they’d be when they completed this assignment. For example: ‘I’ll complete my essay on the morning of December 27th (when) by taking my laptop to my local coffee shop (where)’. Three-quarters of this group wrote their essays, whereas only a third of the other group did.

Top tip You are more likely to do what you intend to if you identify specifically when and where you’ll take action. So for each step towards your goal, identify your when–where intention.
