CHAPTER FOUR
PLASTICS!
About 300 million tons (272,155,422 metric tons) of plastic are produced every year, and millions of tons end up either in oceans or landfills. Because of this, saving and reusing plastics is becoming a new trend for makerspaces.
Plastic waste in the worldâs oceans has become such a problem that some stores are now banning certain plastics, such as bags and microbeads.
New inventions such as 3D printers and 3D pens use plastic and can be found at many makerspaces. Some new 3D equipment, such as the Renegade 3D-printing pen, uses recycled plastic bags and plastic bottles as its source material. The companyâs refill makes use of old car dashboards and discarded plastic bottles to create plastic filaments for 3D pens and printers. By using recycled plastics, you will help the environment by making sure that plastics are reused, rather than just discarded.
PROJECT 7: 3D PEN SCULPTURE
This project makes use of a 3D pen to trace a photo and create a stand-up sculpture. A 3D pen is a relatively new handheld tool that takes thin plastic filaments of varying types, sizes, and colors and forces heated plastic out the front so it can be used to build three-dimensional shapes like a pen. The 3D pens work similarly to the way a hot glue gun works, except on a smaller and more detailed scale. The plastic that is extruded from the tips of 3D pens cools almost instantly. This allows for small structures to be built by connecting the melted plastic to itself. Three-dimensional shapes, masks, jewelry, toys, and even scale architectural models are just some of the things that can be made using 3D pens.
Since there are many different 3D pens on the market, be sure to read all the instructions for the one you will be using before you begin.
SUPPLIES
For this project, you will need a 3D pen; ABS or PLA 3D pen filament refills of various colors; small scissors; personal art, photos, or magazine images; tape, and a butter knife.
