Chapter Sixteen

Fiona felt Lorcan’s eyes on her.

“I still feel like we don’t really know one another,” he said.

“Some people never know those they work with. We don’t have to be buddies because we work together.”

“Got secrets, Boomer, besides Goldilocks—your elfae lover?”

She rolled her eyes. “We all have secrets.”

“I’d like to try the speed-dating thing again.”

“Because it went so well last time?” she scoffed.

“Just give me five minutes to ask you questions; then you’ll get five.”

“Whatever,” she replied, unenthused.

He touched the button on his phone, starting the timer. “What are your vices, Boomer?”

“No vices…really.”

“You just said everyone had them.” He sighed probably thinking she wouldn’t give him a straight answer to any question. “Flaws then?”

“God, we only have five minutes,” she only half joked. “Let’s see…I take offense easily—become defensive even when I shouldn’t. I’m protective of my family…to a fault. I don’t know, Lorcan. I honestly have too many flaws to list.”

“Why are you so opposed to falling in love?” He went straight to the next question.

She inhaled. “Do I seem opposed? I’m not actually.”

Fiona didn’t want to get hurt again. Or maybe when it came down to it, she didn’t even believe in lasting love or happily ever after…for her.

She’d loved Diarmuid but was forced to leave him. With her ex-husband she realized too late it was only a combination of her rebelliousness and his demonic charm.

She probably loved Teige, but he’d never really loved her back. He deeply mourned his wife for years, believing she was dead. With Rohese it seemed like too much was stacked against them. She certainly wasn’t going to share all that with Lorcan.

“How come you’re such a private person? You let on you don’t need anyone.”

Did she? God, she really must seem cold.

“How does anyone know why we are the way we are?” she said. “It would take loads of therapists to sort that one out.”

“Do you think you and I have anything in common?”

She thought for a minute. “We both love my Irish grandchildren. We like to read, enjoy brunch and English gardens.” She looked back outside. “Your bridge and pond are lovely.”

“They’re fantastic, aren’t they?” he said. “I worked on that last weekend. I don’t need much sleep, which leaves loads of time for projects. But go on, what else do we have in common?”

She’d already found more similarities than she would have believed.

“We don’t like being told what to do and have problems with authority figures. We avoid remembering the Battle of Magic.”

He didn’t flinch when she mentioned that, even though she was well aware they’d both been scarred by it. He’d lost his father and adopted brother.

“Besides little kids, that grumpy old feline, sunrises, and gardens with flowers, what makes you smile, Boomer? Because you have the prettiest smile.”

She felt herself blush.

“My children and grandchildren.” She smiled thinking about them. “Yes my cranky old miog—most animals—all of nature really. Memories of my childhood in Ireland and of Cal when he was a little boy. Those always makes me smile.”

The alarm on his timer went off.
