The world shook around Abi as she stumbled her way down the fire escape of the abandoned building across the road from the Club of Night. Only Sasha’s grip on her arm stopped her from falling down the metal steps when the next tremor hit. Her head was pounding and a thin stream of blood ran from her forehead, obscuring her vision.

“Get to the street,” Fia ordered from behind them as she helped Nate haul what little of their comms equipment remained intact.

The first tremor had taken them all by surprise. Earthquakes were unheard of in Ireland, so Abi’s first thought had been a bomb explosion. When the next shockwave hit and the road between their building and the club had split in two, she realised what was happening just in time to get brained by a falling plank of wood that had moments before served as a rooftop billboard.

On the far side of the road, bodies streamed out of the club. The Council security team had obviously unblocked the exits when the building had begun to crumble around them. As she raced down the final flight of steps, Abi scanned the crowd for any sign of a familiar face. Where were the others? They couldn’t stay in there; the building was going to collapse.

Behind her, Nate muttered curses under his breath as he tried without luck to get the comms to connect. “I’m just getting static. Either the signal’s down or …”

“Okay,” Fia said with a calm she couldn’t possibly feel as they reached the chaos of the street. “We need to go in after them. Sasha, come with me. Nate, get Abi clear in case the building falls.”

Abi opened her mouth to protest – she was pretty sure a collapsing building was just as dangerous for a Supe as it was for her – but the two wolves took off at a run before she could speak. They leapt over a huge crevice that bisected the road and disappeared into the wreckage of Darius’s club.

“Dammit, now would have been a good time for that backup to arrive,” Nate muttered.

She gave him a questioning glance, but he ignored it and beckoned her to follow. “Come on. We need to secure the back of the building.”

Her legs were shaky, but she managed to keep pace with him without breaking an ankle on any of the spiderweb cracks that had created an obstacle of concrete ahead of them. Sirens echoed in the distance, and the sound seemed to spur the club’s patrons to clear the vicinity at record speed. Only a few of the more badly wounded men and women stumbled about in a daze and if Abi had to guess, she’d say they were the human customers.

Miraculously, the worst of the damage appeared to be at the front of the club. The tight knot of dread eased just a little in her chest as she took in the remaining people fleeing through the emergency exits. Most were covered in dust
