Fourteen
Time had gotten away from me. By the time I pulled up in front of the marina, I expected to find Rudy and Colin sitting outside with their fishing gear in their hands and scowls on their faces. Instead, I found an ambulance, a sheriffâs car, and a coroner. I had barely stopped the truck when I threw the door open and jumped out. I ran inside the marina as fast as I could, heart thudding with an adrenaline boost.
âTorie,â Rudy said and grabbed me by the arm. âAm I glad to see you.â
âWhat is going on?â
âWhat happened to your eye?â he asked.
âOh, Roberta punched me.â
He just stared at me for a minute and then he shook his head. He looked as if heâd eaten something that didnât agree with him. As if he were ready to puke at any moment. âSomebody killed Brian Bloomquist.â
âWhat?â I asked. âWhy? How?â
Rudy seemed to be a little pasty, too. âI donât know why, but the how ⦠Seems to be a knife in the jugular.â
I gasped. âOh, no,â I said, and covered my mouth.
âThatâs not the worst of it,â he said and hugged me.
âWhat? What else could be worse?â Suddenly I realized that Colin was nowhere around. âOh, no. Not Colin.â All I could think about was my motherâs happiness shattering into a million pieces. Sheâd spent so many years alone and all of a sudden she had found this man who made her really happy, and then I had to take him to Minnesota and get him killed.
âColinâs fine,â Rudy said. âWell, sort of.â
âWhat, Rudy? What?â
Rudy moved aside so that I could get a good view of my stepfather.
In handcuffs.
Colin was being questioned by the local sheriff. Blood covered his hands, was smeared on the front of his shirt and all over his shoes. He wore a very worried expression on his face, but the worry seemed to be wrestling with anger. I could see it seething from his very being.
âColin killed Brian Bloomquist?â
âNo,â Rudy said. âOf course he didnât kill Brian Bloomquist.â
âWell, then why is he in handcuffs?â
âBecause they think he killed him.â
âI am so confused, Iâm amazed my head hasnât exploded all over the place. Like those watermelons when that comedian Gallagher gets ahold of them.â
âYou look like shit,â he said. âSorry, but itâs the truth.â
I just smiled at him. No sympathy. No worry. Just you look like shit. Well, he didnât look too hot himself. It made me worry about what heâd seen. âOkay, slow down and tell me everything,â I said.
He took a deep, cleansing breath, looked to the sky as if for guidance, and began talking. âColin and I came back in from the lake about five-thirty. Thatâs a little later than Brian likes, but at the last minute I got a really good bite,â he said.
âJust tell me how my stepfather ended up in handcuffs!â
âIâm trying, Torie. Be patient. I went to the menâs room, which is around back. So if you have to take a whiz, you donât have to come all the way in the building.
