Chapter 22

Helen had no reason to doubt Jean; she trusted her implicitly. If Jean said she’d heard Jimmy saying what he’d said, then that was what had happened. It was as simple as that. So who had he been talking to? There was only one way to find out. She decided to confront him head on. She dialled his number, but his phone went to voicemail. ‘You owe me an explanation,’ she said flatly before she hung up.

‘You all right, love?’ Jean called.

Helen stared at her phone, all kinds of thoughts going through her mind, jealous, angry thoughts. She wondered if she’d misjudged Jimmy. How could she have been so stupid as to fall for him when she didn’t really know him? His home was in London, he had his own life there; who was to say he didn’t have a woman there too?

‘Helen?’ Jean called again.

‘Yeah, I’m all right, Jean, thanks,’ Helen replied. She walked into the kitchen and found Jean trimming pastry around a plate.

‘I’m sure there’s a simple explanation,’ Jean said, without pausing.

‘I wish I felt as certain,’ Helen muttered under her breath.

She missed the look Jean gave her as she gathered her mop and bucket. She took her phone too, in case Jimmy called back. However, when her phone rang that day, the calls were from guests booking in, or from the linen company who laundered the hotel’s bedding and towels, or from the local butcher confirming her order for sausages and bacon, or . . . well, they were from anyone other than Jimmy. Helen carried her anger inside her all day. At one point, she was so furious that she tapped out a sarcastic text and was just about to hit send when she thought better and deleted it. She was damned if she would get in touch with him. He was the one who’d run out on her, and she wasn’t going to chase him. She had too much pride for that.

Later, she managed to distract herself from thinking about Jimmy while she was working with the actors in the lounge. Suki lay at her feet, her skinny body in the hallway and her head under Helen’s chair. When rehearsals began, the actors were subdued at first. Smiles were forced rather than spontaneous, and conversation was hushed. Helen watched them one by one, wondering if behind their professional smiles, they still remained suspicious of each other. Chester seemed distant, not the forceful leader he’d been. Kate barely looked up from her script, and Audrey seemed embarrassed to be stepping into Carmen’s role. She faltered over her lines and spoke with a catch in her voice. Liza hovered by her side, holding her hand, encouraging her to carry on. It was touching to witness. With Audrey now taking on the role of Maude, Paul was reading the role she had originally played. However, he struggled trying to read the script as well as use his laptop to type up technical notes. He got flustered easily and Helen’s heart went out to him.
