It was a lovely day. A stream of humanity flowed through the sunny streets, unaware of the eyes scrutinizing them. Every policeman on duty was looking for a weedy youth and a placid, broad-shouldered man. At the stations, however, people could hardly fail to notice that they were being examined from head to foot.

On Rue du Pot d’Or, a truck was drawn up in front of the Gai-Moulin. Cases of champagne were hauled out and carried into the cool darkness. Génaro, in his shirtsleeves, a cigarette between his lips, checked the cases as they passed. His lips curled slightly in a contemptuous smile each time a passerby whispered excitedly to his companion:

“That’s the place!”

Their steps would slow for a moment or two as they tried to peer through the doorway. They had to be content with the glimpse of a crimson plush seat and a marble-topped table.
