Chapter Fifteen
They spent most of the day hanging out at Laurie’s. It was nice, Alice thought, being back with people she knew.
Laurie’s mother and grandfather, of course, were shocked by their house guests.
“Oh sweetheart, it’s so good to see you,” Cindy said as she pulled Alice into a tight hug. “We’ve been so worried.”
“Knew you were surviving out there alright,” John said proudly as he took Alice in for a hug of his own. “Fighters, the both of ya. Where’s your mother at, anyways?”
Oh god. Alice took a deep breath before quietly repeating the story of what had happened the night the men in black had come. Cindy and John were both heartbroken to hear Linda had been captured, and even more impressed that Alice had been surviving for so long almost completely on her own.
It occurred to Alice, as they ate breakfast, that she was going to have to face all of her mother’s old friends that night. None of whom knew what had happened.
She hoped Laurie would help her explain.
“It’s so quiet here,” Riley said in awe as she and Alice sat in the backyard, enjoying the fresh air. Laurie was at work, Cindy had gone shopping, and John was in the kitchen making lunch. He’d shooed them out when they had tried to help. “I don’t think I could handle living here.”
“I miss the quiet,” Alice admitted as she lay back on the grass, staring at the sky. “I mean, obviously I miss having a solid, permanent roof over my head, but living here was nice in general.” It was home.
Riley thought for a moment before lying back with Alice, tucking her hands behind her head. “You know… maybe we could stay,” she suggested quietly. “It’s probably the last place anyone would think to look for you, and you know people here so it probably wouldn’t be hard to get a job. We could get an apartment… have a life.”
“There’s still Daniel to worry about,” Alice pointed out.
“We can find a way to make ourselves untraceable. It’s hard but possible. I bet Lily would help. Besides, maybe he’s given up now. I mean it sounds like you made it pretty damn clear that you don’t want anything to do with him.”
Alice wished she could believe that… but there was something in the back of her mind, nagging at her, insisting that she still wasn’t safe, even now.
She shifted to press against Riley, resting her head on Riley’s chest and yawning. Riley smiled, running a hand through her hair.
“Tired?”
“Yeah. Been a long few days.”
“Tell me about it,” Riley groaned. “Do you think they’d let us stay here for a night or two? Or is there a shelter nearby? I need to not teleport again for a little while before I try to get us anywhere outside of Massachusetts.”
“I’m sure they’ll let us stay,” Alice said confidently. “Or if they don’t, one of my mom’s friends will.”
They’d been like a family, back before everything went to hell. And family always took care of family.
