'I won't pretend there aren't always girls available to satisfy any masculine need,' he

murmured lightly. 'I happen to want you.'

'Why me?' she asked with a curious sensation of breathlessness.

He laughed mockingly. 'Don't you know? Your body excites me to the point of

frenzy.'

She began to tremble, putting up her hands to push his too-intrusive fingers away

from her body. He spun her, holding her captive, and looked down into her face. 'Can

you honestly deny I affect you the same way?' he demanded evenly.

On the point of a denial, she felt her heart begin to thump violently and she could

only shake her head helplessly.

Randal's hands clasped her face, cupping it between his palms. He gazed deep into

her eyes. 'We need each other,' he said softly. 'Forget about love, my sweet. You

can make love without ever being in love, you know. There's no reason to be

ashamed of the demands of your body. Making love can be a world-shattering

experience. Just let it happen. Forget' the whole world-only think about this ..‟

His mouth moved down to possess hers and she groaned, shaking with an

overpowering desire for him, her arms locked round his neck, her body pressed hard

against his. The grey sky spun overhead. The light vanished. Against her closed

eyes an exploding sun seemed to colour the world crimson.

Randal was breathing thickly as he stopped kissing her. His glittering eyes rested

briefly on her flushed, sensuous face.

family party. I don't want to wait long-my nerves won't stand it.'

Next day he took her out to buy her a new dress for the party. Laura was shy at the

prospect, but he proved an expert at choosing women's clothes. She even teased

him about it, saying no doubt he had clothed other women in the past.

'A few,' he admitted shamelessly. 'Jealous?'

She went pink and tossed her head. 'Of course not. Why should I care?'

'Why indeed?' he drawled.

He chose a fragile floating silver dress, the straight skirt falling from two thin

shoulder-straps without any pretence of a waist. On her slender body it shimmered

and glittered like tinsel.

When they got back to her house he made her put it on to show her mother, and

later, alone with her downstairs, he took a flat black box out of his pocket and said

commandingly, 'Turn round!'

Surprised, she obeyed. He came up behind her and lowered something cold around

her slim throat.

She looked down and saw green and silver glinting at her. It was a necklace of

emeralds set in silver.

She gasped. 'Good heavens! '

Randal kissed her on the back of her neck. 'I thought it would look good with this

dress,' he said in satisfaction.

She turned round to look at him. 'It ... it looks very valuable. I'll be afraid I shall lose

it.'

He slid one of her shoulder-straps down and bent to kiss her creamy shoulder. 'I

must go,' he said reluctantly. 'I've got a lot of work to do.'

She saw little of him over the next few days. When he came to collect her and
