Chapter 25
With the sweet warm winds blowing inland from the Sacred Shore whipping through his black robes, Rin Winter-Bloom stood on the back of the black-scaled dragon to watch the dense forest of unknown trees below them. He held onto the purple spine in front of him to keep himself from falling as he gazed in awe at the mist-veiled valleys and bubbling streams that snaked through the mossy unaltered wilderness. A light mist hung in the air, but the sun was shining on the other side of it, casting hazy pillars of beaming golden glow across the rocky hills and patches of leafless white trees with their purple flowers on their otherwise bare branches.
The young nobleman had never seen anything like it. It was a world untouched by humans, by trade, by buildings. He gasped when he spotted a herd of around one hundred delicate pink-colored deer bounding through the lichen-spotted meadows, their metallic silver antlers glinting in the morning rays. A mating pair of golden eagles swooped down from the patchy clouds, gliding so close that Rin could hear the rustle of their white-tipped feathers when they passed overhead.
Crumbling archways of ancient elven ruins sat up against a cliff, its smooth marble slabs overgrown with vines and tall grasses that thrived around the shimmering pool and the tall waterfall that fed the river next to it. Brown bears lumbered down the pebble-covered riverbanks while others caught pale blue fish as they jumped upstream in the roaring rapids. Green dragonflies darted from lily pad to lily pad where orange and white goldfish jumped out of the water to catch them in their gaping mouths.
The land was beautiful, it was wild, it was more greenery and flowers than Rin had seen in his lifetime. Basically trapped in the towers and surrounding areas of Mophestin, all he had previously known, aside from his short trips to the southern provinces, were the grey stone mountain ranges and the snow-covered rocky cliffs of the villages. Only the pink frost lotuses grew at those altitudes and in the harsh conditions. But here, life of all kinds thrived in the warm air, the lush forests, and favorable weather.
Valifreay flew lower until she was soaring barely above the tops of the lowest trees. "Welcome to the Siavata Wildlands, Rin. These forests and meadows belong the Olyov elves. They are the lands of legends. Hidden in these woods and caves are the creatures in all the children's tales. In the open fields live the faeries, the pink stags, and the day trolls. Along the shores live the mermaids, the giant octopuses, and the ghosts of sailors who died at sea in the storms. In the marshes and willow groves live the dryads, the gnomes, and the elusive wood dwarves. Then in the woodlands are the worst of them all. Anywhere you see the white trees with those purple rose-like flowers blooming are controlled by unicorns."
"Unicorns? They can't possibly be real, Valifreay."
"I'm sure you would have said the same about dragons before we met.
