Chapter 16

Comparing Notes at the ‘Speak’

Saturday evening, August 13, 1921

“I don’t want to sit around this cramped hotel room.” Anneka’s eyes scanned the small room. “Is there someplace to go in this town?”

“As a matter of fact, Mr. Robinson told me about a speakeasy in the basement of the Nicolett Hotel.” Garth buttoned his tan sport coat. “Why not go there?”

“I’m with you, Garth. I could use a beer after that encounter.” I secured my Colt behind my back, turning to Anneka. There was a deep frown on her face.

“What about that promise you made me?”

“You mean about the beer? This is a special occasion.” I knew about the promise to quit drinking, but once in a while, it’s okay. “Just this once. It won’t hurt anything to have one brewski.”

“Yeah, right,” She growled in her sweet way. “I’ll be watching you.”

“The Nicolett is over a mile down the road.” Garth looked out the window. “I don’t remember seeing any taxi cabs around our hotel, so I guess we’ll have to walk.”

It only took us half an hour to make it to the Nicolett Hotel. The evening was cool, once the sun set. Lubbock, surprisingly, had a great deal of evening traffic on Main Street for a small town.

“Looks like Texas is developing into a civilized state.” I elbowed Garth, pointing out the autos whizzing by.

“Now, watch yourself. Don’t make fun of this backwater town in the presence of others, Major. Texans are known for being proud of their state.”

“I’ll keep that in mind.” I looked up at the front of the hotel, adding, “Do you know where the entrance to the speakeasy is?”

“Nope. But I’m sure the doorman does.” Garth walked to the double entrance doors and stopped as an elderly man wearing a gray uniform opened them for us. “Good evening, my good man. Before we enter your worthy establishment, I have a question.”

“Go right ahead, sir, ask away.”

“Well, I was informed that you had a special place with a small green door. Is that right?”

The doorman lost his smile, peering suspiciously at all three of us. “You some kinda Federal agents or somethin’. Who sent you here?”

“That would be old man Robinson down at the furniture store,” Garth explained. “Don’t fret; we’re not government agents.”

“Hold on a minute or so. I’m gonna call ol’ Robby. He should be at home ‘bout now. What’s y’all’s names?” Garth told him as the doorman walked off, leaving us out in the cold.

“You’d think he’d at least let us in the lobby.” Anneka had her hands on her shoulders, hugging herself.

I took a deep breath. “Ah, it’s a lovely night out, Anneka. I’m surprised your Nordic blood can’t take a little chill.”

“I suppose I’ve been in sunny California too long.” She rubbed her arms then dropped them.

The doorman came back. But instead of letting us into the hotel, he led us through an alley to the back of the hotel. “The password tonight is ‘windmill.’ Just knock on that door and give it to the man who answers.
