Chapter 19

Guard Duty

Garth was chatting with Tillie Monday at the end of the bar. She was all dolled up in an emerald green flapper dress. Tillie gave all the appearances of enjoying herself. So, when I corralled Garth to draw him away, she gave me a deep frown, slamming her cocktail glass on the bar viciously.

“Sorry, my dear,” Garth muttered softly. “I’ve got work to do.”

“What kind of work?” she growled. “This is a fun shindig. You can’t just run off, leaving me with these wolves.”

I gazed around, noticing most of the men were occupied with the women, except Rocky. He stepped away from Kitty to order another beer. “It doesn’t appear as if the wolves are hunting right now,” I said. “You’ll be safe. Come on, Garth. We need to hurry.”

I took one more glance around the ballroom. It looked like Bernice wasn’t in a friendly mood. She walked off by herself as Thomas offered Janet Harwood, the pretty Irish girl, a drink. That’s odd. He and Bernice had latched on to each other. I turned to Garth. “Let’s go.”

He nodded, pulling Tillie close, gingerly kissing her. “My apologies. If I can return later, I will.” He backed away as we strode to the corridor. “How much time do we have, Major?” he asked as we mounted the stairs.

“Maybe half an hour. They’re having a snack in the kitchen before coming up.”

We reached the second floor, then walked toward the front of the house and climbed the circular stairs to the third floor where the family suites were. “Their suite is at the front of the house,” I reminded Garth.

“Yes, old man, my memory is intact. You have the key?”

“I’ve got two of them,” I replied. “I’ve got Jerome’s and Sally’s. But the upstairs maid has the third, and she has taken it home.”

“It can’t be helped,” Garth said, his voice shallow. “Open the door.”

I moved in front of him and did as instructed. The door swung open to a lavish bedroom. We stepped into a spacious room that held three sofas in a half-circle, facing a small fireplace. The sofas were upholstered in red-dyed leather with oak tables between them.

Behind the sofas, at a right angle, sat an oversized double bed. The red bedspread had an array of pink pillows spread along the headboard. The bed sat in an immense alcove surrounded by windows. All the windows were covered with overlapping pure white, sheer curtains with beaded tiebacks.

“Such posh living isn’t for me, old man,” Garth commented as his eyes surveyed the room. “Those curtains would never stop a bullet. If a shooter were at this elevation, using a scope, the Stroheims would be sitting ducks.”

“I see what you mean,” I answered, looking out the window. “It’s too dark to see if there’s a place for a sniper to lie in wait. We should have checked before sunset. As to the furniture, to each his own. I would venture Sally had something to say about the decor.”

“Undoubtedly,” Garth said, stepping up to the windows.
