Andrea Meneghina, the pompous Gonzaga Chamberlain, cowered in the Camera degli Sposi, as Isabella d'Este crumpled the document in one hand and hurled it back at his chest.

"I do not choose to hear this!" She shrieked. "I refuse to believe an experienced professional like Pagano just disappeared! The toad and his master had him killed! I'm certain of it!”

She half turned, and, in her frustration and anxiety, slammed her hand down against the arm of her chair. The loud crack startled the chamberlain who visibly recoiled, but after a moment he hurriedly announced, "Our agent in Florence has theorized Maestro Leonardo was assisted by the Borgias."

"The damned Borgias again?" Isabella screamed at him. "When will the true nobility move against them? What was the purpose of all that intrigue and plotting if we are not to act upon the plan we discussed at the christening of the toad's child?"

The chamberlain shrugged. "I'm certain it is only a matter of time until - !"

The Marquesa suddenly bolted from her throne and descended the dais.

"Time is my enemy, damn your eyes!" Isabella roared at her subordinate. "Time has a way of wiping away the memory of past insults! I cannot wait for time to provide me with justice!" She paced back and forth before the dais. "We must be clever, Andrea! Very, very clever! If assassination is impossible, then there must be another way to bring this arrogant painter down!" She stopped and stood directly before him. "I want to know everything that happens in the Maestro’s botteghe! Everything! I want the names of everyone who visits him and why they came! Do you understand?"

Andrea swallowed and attempted to smile. "I will send word to Fra de Novellara, Excellency," he murmured. “If you remember, he now has an agent in the Maestro's botteghe.”

"All I want is justice for the death of my dwarf and the turmoil over the three Tears of the Madonna!" She squealed and ascended the dais once more. "Is that too ask?”

“No, Excellency," groaned Andrea.

“Then – damn it – do something!”

I may cut my throat, thought the chamberlain.
