Chapter 8
Sasha called to let me know that sheâd looked through Gizelleâs things, including those items returned by the police after their investigation, but hadnât found the phone we both knew sheâd had with her the night she died or the jacket we assumed sheâd been wearing. Parker had called earlier to let me know that Gizelle had been wearing the jacket when her body had been found, so that question at least had been answered. Parker postulated the theory that it was entirely possible, even likely, that the phone had ended up on the bottom of the bay if it had actually been in the pocket of the jacket. I could tell that Sasha was frustrated with how things were going, but she assured me that sheâd keep digging, and I assured her that Iâd continue to dig as well. I decided to head down to the marina to see if I could find anyone I hadnât spoken to yet who might have seen or heard something on the night of the party who hadnât come forward so far, which is when I ran into Jackson, who informed me that he planned to attend the cookout tonight, and was bringing a date he was anxious to introduce to all of us.
Good for him, I thought to myself. Now that Tegan had moved on, it was important for Jackson to move on. As long as I had him, I asked him if heâd heard anything new about Gizelle Davenportâs drowning since weâd last spoken. He shared that while he didnât know anything with any degree of certainty, he had heard that one of the men who leased a slip for his yacht in the marina remembered seeing a woman wearing dark clothing loitering around in a suspicious manner the night of the party. Of course, a lot of people, mostly the press, seemed to have been loitering around since Gizelle and Broderick had come to town, so someone loitering on the night of the party really didnât serve as much of a clue at this point.
After I finished at the marina, I checked my tracking app to see if Peter Jaskowski had met up with his friends at two oâclock as had been planned. According to my app, his car was at the bowling alley. I wouldnât have any problem getting the shot I needed if the man had entered a bowling tournament. I wasnât sure if Mr. Jaskowski had noticed me at the coffee shop this morning, but in an abundance of caution in case he had, I decided it would be prudent to alter my look a little, so I headed home and changed my clothes, pulled on a baseball cap, and grabbed a pair of glasses with clear lenses that gave me a different look without the unneeded correction. I then grabbed the bowling bag containing the bowling ball and shoes Iâd purchased when I was in college and headed to the bowling alley. When I arrived, I sat at a table occupied by one of the teams as they waited for their start time.
