TRIANGLE

Size and shape of a billiard rack,

but not so packed; a frame

of reference for radiance,

it once had crowned an altarpiece

in Santa Croce. Why is it here?

What does it matter? Eternity

travels, and would just as soon

shimmer on a museum wall

in San Diego for a while.

Three profiled angels on each side

of the Father make the Trinity

He tops top of your mind,

distracted, though, by those two holding—

what? Long-handled mirrors for

gazing at their own gorgeousness?

No, what Giotto’s got to do

is make God in man’s image and

render His resplendence as

intolerable, so that this pair

of angels must lift shields (I see

at last that’s what these are) before

their eyes; meantime the other four,

bright-winged beauties all, get by

with a mere hand as visor.

Which raises then the question: why

don’t they all turn away? And why

can’t I stop myself from looking

at them looking-but-not-looking

at the thing that dazzles them,

not Godhead and not even paint

but the triangulating point

which is belief? Not quite: again.

This might be what I mean:

if, say, God’s light could torment

even the willing angels, this

is how I believe they’d look.
