How to Play

Begin by reading the “Training Bailey” section on page 61 to learn the basics of animal training. Have your partner choose an animal (and maybe even pretend to be that animal).

Next, select a “bridge.” A bridge is a signal that tells the animal it has done something right. Examples of bridges are clapping your hands or saying the word “good.” You can choose anything for your bridge, as long as it’s consistent. In real life, you’d need to teach your animal that the bridge means “good job.” In this case, assume your animal already understands.

Start by training a simple behavior such as a jump up and down. Lightly touch the target to the top of your animal’s head, then give it a bridge (clap or say “good”) and hand your animal a treat. Next, try to get your animal to jump by holding the target a little higher than its head. If it jumps, give the animal a bridge and a treat as a reward. If it doesn’t jump, go back to the beginning. Touch the target to its head and give it a bridge and a treat, then try the jump again.

Once your animal jumps, hold the target a little higher. Then, a little higher. Be sure to give the animal a treat each time it succeeds. See how high or how far you can get your partner to jump for a treat.

Switch roles and try training a new behavior. Teach your partner to roll over, to follow you into the next room, or to flap her arms up and down like a bird. No matter what behavior you’re training, be sure to tackle it one step at a time.
