The tiny flash of hurt disappointment in her eyes vanished almost as quickly as it appeared, leaving Mitch feeling like an asshole.

Making love to Zinnia would have been a dream come true, but he couldn’t let it happen. Hell, he was almost old enough to be her father in truth—not just her Daddy.

He’d played with younger women many times, yet never with the same one more than once or twice. Of course, none of those partners had been Zinnia—the one woman he wanted for more than a casual scene. If they made love, he wasn’t sure he’d ever be able to let her go.

“I’m sorry,” she said when he didn’t answer right away. “I thought we… anyway, I’ll be fine.”

He caught her wrist gently before she could escape. “I’d like nothing better than to make love to you until you fall unconscious, but I’m fifteen years older than you are.”

“I think that stops mattering so much when we’re both over thirty,” she murmured, extricating her wrist from his grasp. “And you don’t need to give me excuses. Consent is a yes or no question and it goes both ways. You’re not required to provide a reason for either answer.”

It was more than clear she understood how consent worked. She also wasn’t a college student hooking up with an older instructor. Zinnia was a grown woman, and Mitch had no business telling her what she should or shouldn’t want.

Maybe there was a way to make her change her mind. He hesitated, then decided it was for the best. There was no way she was ready for what he really wanted from her.

“You’re right about consent,” he finally said, “but I do want to give you a reason.”

“That isn’t necessary.” She turned to face the door, but he caught her hand before she could escape.

“Your consent is only the first thing I want from you.” He stood and crowded her against the bed, shamelessly getting into her space.

She swallowed nervously and her lips parted on a soft gasp. “What else do you want?”

He traced a finger down her breastbone and nudged the collar of her robe aside to reveal the upper curve of her breast. “Everything, little girl.”

“I… what does that mean?”

“Just what it sounds like.” Gently, he turned her to face the window and standing behind her, he circled her elegant throat with his hand. Her breath hitched and he felt her pulse race under his fingertips.

To his surprise, she leaned against him, putting her ear in just the right position to nip. “You’ll have to be more specific. Everything covers a lot of ground.”

Mitch couldn’t decide if he was proud of her for holding her ground or disappointed she wasn’t already halfway to Connecticut. He’d need to up his game to convince her he wasn’t the right person for her.

“I’d start by tying you with rope.” Unable to resist the urge to taste her, he bit her earlobe, then licked it to soothe the sting. “But not just to hold you still.
