‘Why is Karl wearing a beret?’ I asked.

‘It’s not important,’ she said as another stick of gum flew into her mouth. ‘What is important is that Simone seems normal.’

I stared at the pictures. ‘No. She’s a lot more than normal. She’s popular!’

As I handed Becky back her phone, I spotted Simone behind her saying good-bye to Molly and Karl. After they walked off, Simone turned and rushed back into the school.

‘What’s she doing?’ I said.

Becky turned around. ‘She? You mean Simone?’

I don’t know why I listened, but a feeling in my gut told me to chase after her.
