Chapter 12
When I awake the next morning, Kit is already up and dressed.
âHey, hope you slept okay?â
âYes, fine. Listen Mac,â her voice drops, âIâm sorry about last night.â
âDonât worry, itâs fine. The main thing is youâre alright.â
âThanks for being so understanding.â
âHey, Iâm not a monster, you know, just trying to look out for you.â I pick up a guitar and start to strum. Sheâs still a bit tense and I play something I think sheâll like, something to relax her. My fingers start on Nirvanaâs âSomething in the Way.â Itâs one I play a lot to practise, because itâs easy, it only has two chords and girls always like it and then I fiddle with the strings and move into âThe Man who Sold the World.â
Kit brightens at that one. âI love David Bowie.â
âThis is Kurt Cobainâs version,â I tell her. I detuned the guitar, so the notes are flat. Iâd expect anyone whoâs been hanging out with Tully Cabe to pick up on something as basic as that.
She shrugs indifferently. âTheyâre Bowieâs lyrics though. Did you know thatâs Feliceâs favourite song?â
I didnât and I file it away at the back of my head. Insights into girlsâ tastes in music are always useful.
âSo you two are Bowie fans together?â I ask.
âYeah, youâre really good on the guitar. Can you play anything?â
Thatâs always been my strong point, picking stuff up by ear, only needing to hear it once or twice. Itâs what made me stand out, what got me started as a guitarist but itâs useless now because it doesnât help me create. My mind is too full of all the tunes I know already.
âSure, what do you want to hear? How about this? I launch into the Doors song, âLight my Fire.â
âWe saw Jim Morrisonâs grave when we were in Paris,â Kit says softly.
âYou and Tully?â
âYes, it was when we got engaged.â Her gaze is far away, like her mind is elsewhere. And I detune my guitar further before starting into Nick Drakeâs âFruit Treeâ.
âTully says you need strong finger nails to play like Nick Drake.â It surprises me when she recognises the song, though perhaps it shouldnât. I was the one who introduced Nick Drake to Tully. âDonât you love his lyrics?â
Itâs more his unique style of guitar that interests me but I donât say that to Kit. This is the opening Iâve been looking for.
âImagine dying at twenty-six convinced you were a failure? Thatâs what I love about âFruit Tree.â Itâs so prophetic and haunting.â
To me lyrics are just an accompaniment to the tune, secondary to the melody, but to Kit they are the force that drives the song.
âAll the musicians youâve been playing are dead,â she goes on, âit makes you wonder if thatâs the price of fame.â
Her words send a chill down my spine. Sheâs right of course but the choice wasnât intentional. âIs this how you and Tully write lyrics?â
She recoils. âIs that what all this was about?â
âNo, of course not.â I could bite off my tongue.
