Healing the Mind

The word ‘sati’ is translated as the state of being mindful of a spiritual faculty known as ‘indriya’ which forms the basics of Zen meditation. Healing of the mind is a very important aspect in Buddhism because they believe that health of the mind is the main reason for performing Zen meditation.

The mind is associated with enlightenment and ‘sati’ can be defined as the ability to remember, to pay attention and to listen to the present rather than dwell in the past events. When the mind is well, it cannot ‘float away’ easily and will not be covered in confusion and forgetfulness.

A key word used when referring to healing of the mind is ‘smrti’ which refers to the ability of the mind to hold information without losing it and without being distracted. Mindfulness goes beyond the daily awareness of presently taking place events to remembering events which took place in the past and being able to plan for something to take place in the future.

It is for this reason that Zen meditation carries out the healing of the mind. Once the mind is healed, it can successfully recollect events and stay focused in every circumstance. There are some things to know when discussing healing of the mind using Zen meditation:

· When the mind is discussed, it is seen in the form of memory, attention, psychological and neurobiological perspectives. It is for this reason that healing of the mind is done to cover all these mentioned perspectives.

· ‘Samadhi’ also known as sustained voluntary attention is connected to the mind by Zen meditation practices. Samadhi must be built through meditation because it helps one focus his attention on a given object without being distracted.

· Both long term and short term memories are focused by Zen meditation and contemplative thinking is highly focused during healing of the mind.
