The qualities, grounded in Zen discipline, which contributed to making a master of calligraphy or a master tea-man were also applicable to the martial arts, and the Zen master who explored that relationship most thoroughly was Takuan Soho.

Although he left no lineage to succeed him, Takuan was exemplary of the wide scope of Zen influence at the beginning of the Edo period. In addition to being a transmitted Zen teacher, he was also skilled in poetry, chanoyu, calligraphy, and painting. He is even credited with having invented the recipe for the popular pickled daikon radish that is called a “Takuan.” On top of all that, he was a respected scholar and a prolific author. He sought to resolve the growing rift between neo-Confucionist thought and Buddhism; he wrote a commentary on the Xinxin Ming by the Third Chinese Patriarch (cf. Zen Masters of China, Chapter Two); and he wrote about the relationship between Zen and kendo.
