Waiting for Nine to come back to me is pure hell.

I wish there was a way I could’ve offered him a shadow or a portal or something and that he would’ve taken it. I’d feel so much better if I knew that he could use the shadows to escape if necessary.

But, ugh, he can’t.

For the first few days he was living in the human world after the Brinkburn canceled Melisandre's spell, Nine still had a little of his Dark Fae powers left. He could still shade-walk, but he lost that ability weeks ago. Unless I take him with me, like I did with my parents, he has to walk.

No wonder he spent so long working on his plan to get at Gillespie. Without involving me and asking me to give him a hand—or a portal—he has to think like a human.

I still can’t get over Nine driving a car.

He’s adapting to living in the human world way better than I expected. Hell, it’s even better than I have.

I don’t know if I’m jealous or impressed. And then I think about why he felt like he needed to get a car and I’m scared out of my mind.

Can Nine still operate his pockets? He told me once that it’s just an extension of his magic, that he can always access what he keeps stored there. Can he reach for his sword? I remember the knife that Gillespie carried on him. Nine is quick. Is he quicker than a knife?

Oh, man. Oh, man, oh, man, ohman.

I’m pacing. Up and down, up and down. I nibble on the tip of my glove, not quite biting down on the worn leather. Shit, I haven’t even thought of biting my nails since way before the faerie fire that ruined my hands, and here I am.

It’s been hours. And, okay, I have to account for him traveling to wherever Gillespie is. That takes time. What if my old doctor isn’t home? That could take even longer if Nine has to wait for him. Then there’s whatever happens once Nine gets his hands on him…

I shouldn’t be worried. For more years than I’ve been alive, Nine was a member of the Fae Queen’s elite guard. He was trained in the Shadow Academy and I’ve seen first-hand that he knows how to use his sword. Between my mate and my dad, the two of them tried their best to train me just in case I needed to protect myself against Melisandre. He’s good. I know he is.

And hell if Gillespie doesn’t deserve it. If I hadn’t tricked him into letting me out of the shadowless room before I turned the touch around on him, he would’ve taken me somewhere else and Nine would probably still be a statue. Who knows what would have happened to me?

My wacko doctor wanted to breed with me.

I shudder, wrapping my arms around my middle, and wait.

I wish I thought to give him one of the pay-as-you-go phones that I have. When I went after him earlier, the phone was an afterthought.
