Zanzibar Parasailing [206 B4] m 0779 073078/0624 099751; e [email protected]; w zanzibarparasailing.com. Parasailing flights, which first arrived in Nungwi about 10 years ago, are now a popular diversion. This well-established Kendwa-based company uses specially adapted boats, & participants are harnessed to a parasail & then winched into the air from a platform at the rear of the accelerating boat. It’s unquestionably thrilling & offers spectacular island panoramas. Solo or tandem ‘flights’ are possible, as is an optional dip in the sea on your descent. The flight itself is 10mins long, though several people may be on your boat, resulting in a trip lasting up to an hour. In spite of the company’s name, parasailing is only one of the thrill-seeking water activities available. Wakeboarding & knee-boarding are also on offer. Parasailing is open to anyone over 8. Parasailing US$90/130 solo/tandem; wakeboarding & knee-boarding US$40–200, depending on duration.

Zanzibar Watersports [206 A4] See click here for full details. Escorted jet-ski safaris (75mins) head from the Paradise Beach base in Nungwi to Tumbatu, where riders can have a quick swim before pushing on to Kendwa & back around the coast to the watersports centre. Drivers must be over 16 & no experience is necessary; passengers can be as young as 8. Parasailing, kitesurfing & waterskiing can also be arranged. Jet-ski safari US$180/200 1–2 riders/bike; jet-ski rental US$50/15mins.

Spas, henna painting and hair braiding Temporary henna tattoos have long been de rigueur in Nungwi. Painted on to your skin by friendly local ladies on the beach, they seem to be a rite of passage for younger visitors. As elsewhere on Zanzibar, the beach and bars are full of people with vaguely Arabic- or Celtic-style rings round their biceps. Many clearly believe they look cool; the reality seems highly variable, though. Be warned that the henna can badly mark bed linen, which naturally annoys affected hotel owners – many will charge for stains. For all-out African beach chic, hair-braiding services are also available by the same ladies, along with basic beach massages. For a less public massage experience, most of the more upmarket hotels around Nungwi (click here) have formal spas, and the following is outstanding:

The Zalu Spa [204 E1] m 0778 683960; w essquehotels.com/wellness. Within the Essque Zalu Hotel (click here), this small spa pavilion fans out into sweet-smelling treatment rooms, a Vichy shower room, a sauna/steam & gym area. Using Healing Earth products that blend the organic oils of indigenous African plants, the small team of therapists offer a range of beauty treatments, massages, body polishes & finishing touches from waxing to manicures. There are loungers amid the encircling gardens for pleasant pre- & post-treatment chilling, though the space is limited & it’s not a place for all-day relaxing. Facials US$120/90mins; body treatments US$80–280/60mins–3½hrs; manicures US$55/hr.
