YOU’RE THAT BITCH, TOO

How to Influence the World in 5 Easy Steps

Fuck a niche: I hate having just one niche. I feel like there’s a reason why a lot of us experience mental blockage or creativity blockage, because we’re like, oh my God, I can only do makeup cuz I’m a beauty girl. Like no, who the fuck said that? You don’t have to just be good at one thing online—explore everything that’s exciting to you. And there are people like me who are honestly good at everything. So try to be good at everything. Or if you’re not good at everything, at least try to be okay at a lot of things.

Be kind to everybody: Don’t be afraid to kiss ass sometimes. I feel like the best people I’ve met are the ones at events and stuff that I just kind of go up to and start talking to. Be kind and talk to everyone, even if they don’t look like you. In my earlier days in social media, I was the only fucking bitch at these events who was young, brown, and Asian. And I would like literally just sit there in my corner and wait for someone to come talk to me, but then I realized I had to just start talking to people first. And then you know, I’m talking to the head talent manager at Benefit Cosmetics, and then the next thing you know, I have a fucking commercial with them.

Don’t spend too much: Don’t spend more than what you make. When you become an influencer, especially when you have your big break, the money, the fame, it’ll come fast. But you have to figure out how to keep it going, and how to keep it all sustainable.

Numbers are numbers: They don’t define who you are as a creative, as an influencer. I would say our whole fucking careers are very much controlled by numbers, by how many likes we’re getting, how many dislikes we’re getting, how many comments, how many people are sharing our videos, how much money we’re making, what time to post—even times are numbers, you know what I mean? Our whole industry is controlled by numbers. And I think just removing yourself from those numbers is very helpful. Step away from the numbers sometimes. Don’t let them define you and your work and your work ethics and where you’re headed.

Don’t be afraid to log out: Don’t forget to step away completely every now and then—log out and drink water!
