Salmon is the only carving on my totem pole with predominantly red paint. Her original color was stripped, taken from her by her mother’s fear. When it was redone, it was vibrant, but angry. The black that outlines the other carvings shows steadfastness, solidarity. Salmon is the only one who cannot accept what she is. I wanted to tell her to stop swimming backward. I wanted to guide her back to her home stream and remind her that her past wasn’t just anger, but I didn’t want her to travel down that path again either. Her home was filled with self-hatred and hardship; Salmon is a symbol of sacrifice. She gave up herself and her identity for security.

Sometimes, when salmon cannot find their original streams, they will follow the school of salmon closest to them. They will bed down and spawn in another river, and so they choose to let go of their supposed destiny. They still die, but they allow themselves to struggle a little less beforehand.
