Benito, the backup catcher, was the first to bat for the Pines the next inning. Grumps went back to snorting about the size of the strike zone while Benny took a pitch for a strike, swung through the second, and held up on the third. Solomon Johnson ruled that it was a strikeout.

“That wasn’t a swing, and it sure wasn’t over the plate,” Grumps fumed. He made the BC mark on his card, using so much force that he broke his pencil lead. Apparently, the magic card wasn’t working.

“I’ll sharpen that for you,” I offered.

“You worry about the bats,” said Grumps. “I have another pencil right here.” He parked the broken pencil behind his ear and took another one from behind his other ear.

I put Benny’s bat away and got Tommy’s so he could take practice swings on deck.

Danny O’Brien was batting. He hit a fly ball that was caught. Grumps muttered, even though there was no way for an umpire to get that wrong.

Diego Prado nudged me. “El puercoespín es aquí,” he said, pointing at Spike.

“The porcupine is here? Oh, gotcha!!” I moved closer so Abby could talk to me. “What’s up? You said something about a favor?”
