Coat Lengths in German Shepherds
Short-coated German Shepherd's maintain a short coat, which lies close to the body. These dogs usually have less undercoat. as well. "Plush" Coated GSD's have a medium length coat with a thicker, fluffier undercoat. These dogs do not have any feathering, however.
The coated German Shepherd, also called Long coated German Shepherd's, have much longer fur around their ears, on the backs of their legs, chest and tail (feathering) than other German Shepherd's.
Is there anything wrong with âcoatedâ GSDâs? No!!! If you don't plan on showing your dog in the conformation ring at dog shows, then there is absolutely no reason to avoid the longer coated GSD. They can compete in obedience, agility, etc. quite well. Be aware, however, that the longer coated German Shepherd does require considerably more attention when grooming, however.
Different German Shepherd Coat Patterns
Probably best known is the âSaddle backâ pattern - Most often seen in Black and Tan (or black and cream/red/silver/etc.). This is often seen as the âClassicâ look of the German Shepherd.
Next, is the âBlanket backâ - This is very similar to the saddle back except that the saddle area extends much further down on the body, much closer to the elbow of the GSD and covering most of the body of the German Shepherd, and as the name suggests, a blanket will appear as a much larger area on an animal than will the saddle.
Next, is the âbi-colorâ - This is where almost the entire body is one dark color with lighter markings on only the feet or legs, and possibly the face.
Solid color is the next pattern - and is, as the name suggests, the dog is a solid color, such as a solid black German Shepherd, or a solid white German Shepherd.
Finally, we come to the Sable pattern - This GSD can be seen in a variety of shades. A sable GSD is covered with âbandedâ hairs, each of which is banded with several different colors on each individual hair. If you were to look at any individual hair on a sable GSD you would see that each hair has several different colors on it.
Rarely Seen GSD Coat Colors
I will do my best to describe these rare coat colors since I have no photos of them myself. If youâd like to see some, however, go here. So here goes:
Blue GSDâsâ - âBlue GSDâsâ have very light colored eyes, grey noses (not black), and a grey 'dusty' overall look to their coat. This âblueâ coat color is due to a recessive color gene that both parents must carry in order for the puppy to be born âblueâ. In other words, all the black pigment of the dog appears in shades of blue.
âLiver GSDâsâ - âLiver GSDâsâ are also caused by a recessive color gene carried by both of the GSD puppies parents. In this case, similar to the blues, all black pigment is replaced with browns or liver colors of various shades. These GSDs also have light colored eyes.
