Bridging a prejudice bred from unfamiliarity
Tom said that in his medical education, students were told to be wary of chiropractors. He never really knew what was involved with chiropractic. He knew it dealt with misaligned bones and manipulating joints, but he had no idea of the significance of properly aligned bones and joints. When it comes to treating the body to restore normal function, manual adjustments to joints and manipulation to muscles constitute a big part of what chiropractors do. Adjustments are all based on restoring normal function to the body so the body can heal itself. The biggest misconception people have about chiropractic is that it has to do with bones and that chiropractors are bone doctors. It’s really much deeper than that.
Traditionally, chiropractors are back or spine doctors and are effective in treating people with structural problems. But chiropractic isn’t just for back pain. Because the spine houses the nervous system, which controls body functions, when the function of the spine is improved through chiropractic corrections, many body functions improve as well. Because spinal and cranial problems affect the nervous system, and corrections to these areas improve neurological function, it is more accurate to think of chiropractors as nervous-system doctors.
Tom’s pelvic adjustment reduced his knee pain, partly because it affected the nerves to the knee itself and partly because it affected nerves that stimulate muscles around the knee, which then allowed the muscles to alter the biomechanics of his knee. It shows how structure and function are so interconnected. Correcting a structural misalignment in his pelvis not only changed the structure and biomechanics of his knee, but it also affected the nerve supply to his knee-supporting muscles. The improved neuromuscular function helped to sustain the correction when he got up and walked.
Correcting a spinal problem has the potential to stimulate normal function in any part of the body which is influenced by the nerves in that region of the spine. Earlier, I talked about making cranial corrections on several patients. Besides reducing their head pain by improving structural alignment, these adjustments were done in order to stimulate specific nerves and the parasympathetic portion of the autonomic nerve system. The structural adjustment changes the function of the areas that are stimulated by those nerves.
The adjustment to Tom’s ankle realigned the bones and immediately improved the structure and biomechanics of his ankle, knee, and pelvis. But more important, the adjustment normalized the function of mechanoreceptors in the ligaments of his ankle so they properly stimulated the muscles to “turn on” and support the ankle, knee, and pelvis.
The result of chiropractic adjustments to the spine and joints is improved function of the nervous system, which controls the whole body. Chiropractic is about biomechanical and neurological integrity; it is about health, wellness, human performance, and quality of life.
As are many people, Tom is beginning to understand the existence of a holistic approach that provides many options for one’s health. Unfortunately, his knee, spine, and lifestyle took an unnecessary beating before he came to that understanding.
