Castrating a Buckling

If you plan to raise a buckling past weaning age, you should have his testicles removed, a process called castration. A castrated buckling is called a wether.

A wether can’t get doelings pregnant, so you don’t have to separate them. A wether makes a better pet than a buck and is easier to train for pack or draft. If you raise the wether for meat, he will grow faster and taste better than an uncastrated buck.

Castrate the buckling as soon as his testicles (two walnut-sized organs) descend into his scrotum (the pouch hanging between his back legs). The testicles usually descend when a buckling is 1 to 3 weeks old.

You will need a 9-inch lamb Elastrator. Have an experienced person show you how to use it before trying it on your own. Instead of buying your own Elastrator, you might find a nearby goat or sheep owner willing to castrate your bucklings for you.
