ACUPUNCTURE

As he worked with thin boundary people, Ernest Hartmann noted that they would often report a sense of “energy flow” in their bodies that was lacking in the observations of people with thicker boundaries.18 Acupuncture, in particular, seems to prompt this sense of “energy moving”—a correspondence noted by scientist and author Candace Pert.19

An impressive amount of evidence about the benefits of acupuncture has been gathered by Western scientists since the treatment was “rediscovered” in the wake of president Nixon’s 1971 visit to China. Experiments conducted in the past fifteen years, especially, have brought acupuncture much closer to mainstream acceptance. For example, the practice is known to be able to turn breech babies in utero without the costs and risks associated with typical medical interventions.20 Indeed Mike Jawer’s wife, after a single acupuncture session, felt her breech baby turn at thirty-eight weeks, enabling a safe and natural birth.

Beyond considerations of boundary type, one important reason acupuncture doesn’t work for everyone is because, as practiced in the West, much of acupuncture practice is incomplete or incorrect. Part of the problem is that many forms of acupuncture recently made popular in the West are based on selected, partial, or idiosyncratic interpretations of the ancient Chinese sources. The result can be a somewhat “watered down” or simplified version that is less potent for certain people or problems.

In the same way, a remarkable depth of diagnostic information is available from those classic sources. This material is typically shortchanged by Western practice, though, accustomed as it is to reducing extensive insights about the whole human being into a series of numbers, standardized tests, or biomedical procedures.

Given the demonstrated benefit of acupuncture for most thin boundary conditions, and the moderate efficacy demonstrated for several thick boundary ones, this classic bodymind practice deserves a more complete hearing. Perhaps you’ll be one of those who pushes the “state of the art” forward.
