Reading and the Life of the Mind

Naturally, we then ask, If we take the life of the mind seriously and value the work of scholars and intellectual leaders, how do we lean into and allow their work to inform our lives and our work? On this score, there is little debate: we cultivate the life of the mind through good teaching and good conversation informed by and fueled by the quality—the depth and breadth—of our reading. If we take the life of the mind seriously, it will be evident in the books we choose to read. It means we are fans of libraries and bookstores, and that we take time and space to read. And it means that we choose to read widely, tending to thought leaders who do not merely reinforce what we already know or believe but challenge us and deepen our thinking.
