Matt hired an expensive SUV to get them from Notting Hill to the English country hotel chosen for the press-release weekend. Used to the chaotic traffic in Cape Town and after years of dealing with the erratic driving habits of taxi drivers in his home city, he easily made his way through London and onto the motorway heading north.

He fielded a whole bunch of calls while he was driving and sighed in relief when his mobile finally fell silent. It was a wet, cold, threatening-snow day and Matt adjusted the temperature in the car and sighed at the heat coming up from the seat warmers. He glanced across at Tori, who was unwinding her scarf and unbuttoning her coat. She slipped her arms out of her coat and hung it over the back of her seat and Matt nearly swallowed his tongue as the rich-wine-coloured V-neck sweater pulled across her chest and perfectly delineated her breasts.

Keep looking at those and you’re going to end up under a bus, Cross. Literally.

‘You warm enough?’ he asked, staring hard at the road in front of him.

‘Perfect.’ She sighed, pulling a cute woollen hat off her head and throwing it onto the back seat. She smiled at him and wiggled down into her seat and interesting things happened in his pants.

‘I’ve hardly seen you all week,’ Matt commented.

‘We spoke a couple of times every day on the phone,’ Tori countered.

‘That was work… How are you? Has it been as crazy a week for you as it has been for me?’

Tori sighed. ‘It’s been mad…and I haven’t stopped taking calls since we sent the invites to those journos. What’s this about? Is Maya retiring? Is she gay? Is she pregnant?’

Matt laughed. ‘No connection to Luke?’ he asked, signalling so that he could overtake a delivery van.

‘Hasn’t even blipped on their radar. Men haven’t blipped on their radar. Between leaving Drew and falling in love with Luke did she join a nunnery? She hasn’t been linked with anyone since Drew.’

Matt twisted his lips. ‘She’s ultra-picky about her privacy. She and Luke have been very, very circumspect and very few people knew that they were dating, less knew how serious it is between them.’

‘Huh. Well, good for them.’ Tori half turned in her seat and Matt caught a whiff of her perfume; light, fresh and sexy, dammit. Then again, everything was sexy on her. ‘Maya and Luke are not staying at the hotel. They’ve elected to go home each night…apparently Luke has a place quite close to Silverstone.’

‘Mmm.’

‘You and I are booked in at the hotel. It’s one of those country seventeenth-century homes that have been converted into a boutique hotel. Great food, great ambience…’

‘Great sex?’ Matt said hopefully, half joking. He slid a look at Tori and couldn’t tell what she was thinking by her tipped head and wide eyes. She didn’t say anything for a long while and Matt had to work hard to keep his insouciance. He intended to have her in his bed, he thought.
