6 REvealed

Dawn reached Queen Eerika’s capital, and the vibrant town began to stir. The queen awoke as it was her custom to start each morning at the first light of dawn. She had finally accomplished getting some sleep after a long night of struggling with memories of her past. This was not going to be a usual day for the queen. Rather, she planned to open her gates to the common people and hold court.

“Guards, enter,” Eerika called.

“As you wish,” the nearest guard replied. The guards immediately opened the door to the queen’s chamber and several entered the room. They seemed pleased she had finally allowed them back inside. Guards filled the hallway, and it became clear to the queen that Asger’s assassin still had not yet been apprehended.

“Send for Marin,” Eerika ordered, and the guards scrambled to locate the queen’s favorite servant. Meanwhile, Eerika was now up and preparing herself for what she expected to be an eventful day.

“I am here,” Marin quickly scurried inside. The loyal servant had not ventured far. She was accompanied by three guards.

“Help me prepare for my day,” spoke Eerika. “I want to look especially stunning as I have not ventured outside these walls in the last three days. I am pleased my absence will finally be at an end this morning.”

The headstrong queen proceeded to prepare for the morning. She selected her finest violet dress. Without any more hesitation, Eerika walked briskly to her door and called for her guards. They opened the door and stood to her left and right as she walked past them and began to lead her procession of guards down the hallway. Marin scurried behind the princess and the guards as the queen made her way to her throne. It had been a while since she had taken her place on the throne, and she smiled and felt a sense of accomplishment when she reached her place.

“I decree that you open the Palace gates,” Eerika spoke. “Allow any subject inside who wishes for an audience.”

“Yes, my Queen,” replied the nearest guard.

“Remain vigilant and all shall be well, my guards,” Eerika reassured her concerned men as the first subjects trickled into the Palace.

The first subject to receive an audience was a village elder who had a property dispute with his neighbor. Eerika settled the claim in such a manner that both parties found suitable. More subjects followed suit, and Eerika’s morning remained full of activity as she had not held court in days and wanted to make up for lost time. She decided to settle a case of theft by ordering the guilty criminal to pay restitution as well as a penalty. Further, she decreed that Asger should be forever remembered for his lifetime of valor and service to the kingdom. All the warriors and subjects applauded her decree.

Queen Eerika’s second case to judge seemed more difficult. She relaxed upon her father’s comfortable throne. Guards brought the accused man into the hall and set him in front of the public.
