Chapter Nine

“Have you seen my bazooms on the internet?” Joy Parsley demanded of Seth as he and Cheeto walked through the front door. “They’re famous.”

He clearly was unsure how to answer. I didn’t blame him. The question was heinous.

“Can’t say I have,” Seth answered, looking to me for help.

Joy was flat-out terrifying.

“Not to worry,” she assured him, pulling out her phone. “Got a picture of them right here.”

“Nope and zip it,” I said to Joy as Cheeto took a running jump into my open arms.

The little girl was sporting her look. It was beautiful just like she was. She looked like a doll. Her eyes were an unusual cornflower blue and her blonde curls were a tumbled and adorable mess. Her tiara was placed haphazardly on her head and her pink and blue sparkly tutu went tremendously with her daisy-covered, orange t-shirt, purple shorts and red cowboy boots.

“Did you miss me?” she asked, covering my face in kisses.

“So much,” I told her, happily accepting her greeting.

Seth had been correct. She didn’t seem to be affected by what she’d seen go down in the parking lot. My relief was visceral, but I was very aware she could be suppressing her emotions. We would have to keep a close eye on her.

“Daddy believes in magic,” she whispered in my ear.

“I know,” I whispered back.

“Alrightyroo!” Flip said, taking Cheeto from my arms and hugging her close. “I want some of that sugar too.”

Cheeto obliged and Flip danced them around the room as her beautifully wrinkled face got covered in sloppy kisses.

“Wouldn’t mind a little sugar over here,” Sally Dubay said with a wide smile.

“You got it,” Cheeto shouted as she wiggled out of Flip’s arms and dashed over to Sally.

Seth watched his daughter with an expression of grateful awe on his face. The man looked as if he might cry. It was moving and heartbreaking at the same time.

“She’s going to be okay,” I told him softly as Cheeto made the rounds and laid some sugar on everyone, including Thick Stella.

“Thanks to you, Clementine,” he said, looking down at me.

I shook my head. “Nope. Thanks to you,” I insisted. “Not everyone would open their mind to the impossible.”

Seth sucked in a breath through his teeth. Unfortunately, the move was sexy. I tried to glance away. I couldn’t.

“If you love someone enough, anything is possible,” he said, staring straight into my soul.

Reality to Clementine. Do not plunge into the shark-infested waters. Instead of speaking, I nodded. I was getting better at deflecting.

“We might wanna go outside,” Ann Aramini said, holding a giggling Cheeto upside down by her feet. “It would suck if we blew up the house.”

“What exactly are we going to do?” Seth asked, alarmed.

“Not a clue,” Flip told him, grabbing his hand and pulling him towards the front door. “That’s gonna be up to Cheeto.”

“Shit,” he muttered under his breath as he let Flip drag him outside.

Joy Parsley blocked my exit from the house. If she showed me the picture of her bazooms, I was going to let her have it.
