Get on Magazine Covers

I’ve been on the cover of a lot of magazines—like Success and Time—and I’ve sold a lot of books. My books have made it onto the front pages of The Los Angeles Times, The New York Times, and other major papers around the globe. I know what you’re thinking: “Mark, don’t I have to be famous to get on a magazine’s cover?” The answer is no. So how can you make it happen?

Start by finding publications that serve your niche market. Suppose you’re an astrologer who has written a book for teenagers. Do you think you will have an easier time getting on the cover of People or on the cover of a magazine that specializes in astrology? So first target magazines that serve your future buyers. Ask for a cover story. Tell the magazine’s editor exactly why you would be a compelling person to choose. What about you or your story is so extraordinary that their readers will connect to you?

Magazines choose their covers based on sales potential. So when you speak with editors, explain why a cover story about you will sell more copies of their publication. You don’t have to be that blunt about it, but you do want to capture their attention in a way that makes them think, “If I feature this person, my readers will love him or her, and we can pick up some new readership as well.”

Once you get your book written, get it in the news! If it’s just the front page of your small community newspaper, that’s great! You can send that paper to the magazine whose cover you’re hoping to get on. When editors see you in print, it is much easier to see you as their cover story. Local magazines and newspapers are always looking for interesting people to write about, so get out there and make the news!

During the O. J. Simpson murder trial, jury members were not allowed to read newspapers, watch TV, or listen to any news reports. However, they could read books. For Jack and me, it was a perfect opportunity to shine. We sent Chicken Soup for the Soul books to Judge Lance Ito and, with his permission, all the jurors. Each and every day, they proudly carried our books into court, and Chicken Soup became a real news item. Later, when two jurors were interviewed, they said the only good thing about being sequestered was reading our books.

The point is, watch the news and use it innovatively to your advantage. Read the news with an eye and mindset for becoming a positive and illuminating part of it.

By the way, the flip side of your success in getting on magazine covers is maintaining great relationships with the editors who featured you. Send flowers to thank them for your covers. Make sure they remember you as someone easy to work with and someone who appreciated them. That will set the stage for future features on you and your books.

You should also maintain a relationship with the photographers who shot your pictures.
