MY HEART
A loud thud jolted Ha Neul awake. She sat upright and rubbed her eyes. But her desk, nightstand and wardrobe were nowhere in sight. Instead, a long conference table greeted her. And Shin was seated at the end of the table with a stack of documents before him. He, too, jolted awake like her. Both of their faces were marred with shock and confusion. She wasnât dreaming, was she? Shin quirked a brow and Ha Neul followed his gaze.
Standing behind her was Joon. With an embarrassed laugh, he stepped away from the wall. âThere was a mosquito. I was trying to hit it but itâs too fast.â He scratched the back of his head and laughed awkwardly.
âWhat are you doing here?â Annoyance darkened Shinâs face. âThe meetingâs over.â
Joon turned to Ha Neul. âIâm sorry but I need to talk to Shin. Could you give us some privacy?â
âSure.â Ha Neul rose from her chair and prepared to leave.
But Shin shot his hand out, holding her back. âJust say it.â
Joonâs eyes darted between the two of them. After a few long seconds, he finally spoke. âDad wants to celebrate his sixtieth birthday. Heâs holding a party for all relatives, friends and business partners. He wants you there on that day too.â Then, he glanced at Ha Neul. âYou can bring along a plus one.â He pulled out an exquisite invitation card with Shinâs name in an elegant gold script across the front.
âWhat an excuse to show off his new son.â Shin took it reluctantly. Then, without saying a word more to Joon, he grasped Ha Neulâs wrist and walked out of the conference room.
Once they were out of earshot, with only the two of them strolling down the hallway, Shin broke the silence. âSo we got sucked in probably because I needed to accept the party invitation for the plot to move forward. Iâm sorry. Itâs all my fault.â He let go of her wrist and cast his head down.
Ha Neul stood stunned for a second. This was the first time that Shin was apologizing. And she knew how difficult it was for him to say those two words. âNo, itâs my fault too. This is my story. I wrote it.â She glanced at him but he didnât look up. âWait, the story itself is at fault here. Both of us didnât do anything wrong. It just one-sidedly pulled us in to complete itself. Come on, Shin, huh?â She tugged his hand gently, hoping that she managed to talk some sense into him.
Shin raised his head slowly, his eyes meeting hers unsteadily. âYou think so?â
âOf course!â Ha Neul explained further. âMaybe thereâs some software bug or hardware damage. The laptop did go through a lot. Thrown from the rooftop, drained of battery and all. Itâs weirder if itâs perfectly fine.â
Shinâs mouth drew into a thin line.
It was then that Ha Neul realized she said something wrong. She had triggered his memory of their long-forgotten encounter. And perhaps, it was an unpleasant memory that he wanted to erase.
