Female Pains: Cramping Your Style
Periods are great when they come at the end of sentences, not necessarily when they come every 28 days. As you and the people you live with are fully aware, the menstrual cycle can come with a fair share of side effects—the most common of which is known as “primary dysmenorrhea.” V Essentially, that’s marked by the recurrent, crampy pain that occurs in the lower abdomen during menses. Cramps are thought to be caused by decreased blood flow that accompanies prolonged uterine contractions to get rid of the excess uterine lining when an egg doesn’t implant. The decreased blood flow means the tissues don’t get enough oxygen, and that causes pain.
Of course, these cramping symptoms and other side effects such as mood swings are part of your three least favorite letters in the alphabet—PMS. Several different theories exist about how PMS symptoms occur. Some say that PMS symptoms are brought on by changes in estrogen and progesterone levels that occur during the menstrual cycle. Others say that PMS is caused by an inability to properly metabolize fatty acids, by a calcium deficiency, and even by the use of chemicals, fertilizers, and pesticides. So which is right? Probably a little bit of all of them. And that can often make PMS a PIA to treat. Now we do know more about causes and effects. For example, women who have more pain and cramping are ones who smoke, have longer cycles, irregular or heavy menstrual flow, and a BMI under 20. Luckily, the flip side is also true, and you can do plenty to keep the cramps and other side effects at bay.
FACTOID
Breast cysts lead to a lot of pain, fear, and biopsies, and they’re thought to be present in 60 percent of women and believed to be associated with ovarian hormones. To help, you might try reducing dietary fat and limiting caffeine.
