RESTLESS, IRRITABLE AND DISCONTENT

The 12-Step program warns us to pay careful attention when we feel restless, irritable and discontent, because at that point, we’re probably not going to make the best decision, and the choice that we make could be the choice that leads us in the wrong direction—to relapse or simply continue with our addictiveness in other areas. What is fascinating is that these three words describe the three doshas when activated through the lower Rajasic force: Vata gets restless; Pitta gets irritable; and Kapha feels discontent. Please refer to Table 9.2 for a reminder of the tendencies of the dosha reactions under Rajas.

Most of us are Rajasic, mainly because of our external seeking for happiness, and this can lead to aggression and agitation as it moves to its extremes. Rajas is the mainstay of our active and outgoing culture. We expend our energy on multifarious and trivial choices designed to meet our superficial external sense and ego desires, and this often ends up in a kind of decision fatigue. Rajas brings an over-expression of energy, leading to exhaustion, and this is when the Tamas takes over.
