The space between each breath

Sitting or lying:

Be aware of the space, the void at the end of the out-breath.

Do you allow this resting space or is there a jump to breathe in?

Allow this space, this tranquil moment in your breathing.

Attune yourself to this moment, be one with it.

Let yourself dissolve with this out-breath.

When there is a complete letting go of the out-breath, then the in-breath has a different quality.

From the point of view of the mind this space is empty and lasts a moment, but from the perspective of reality it is full and timeless.

Don’t make an object of this space, you are one with it, you are in identity with it.

It is the stillness from where the breath comes and into which it dissolves back.

Silence is the constant background; the breath is super-imposed on this silence. The breath is an expression of silence and also ultimately one with it. The expressions of consciousness are nothing other than consciousness, there are not two.

Many of the spiritual practices in this book have echoes of the Vijnana Bhairava (Divine Consciousness), a book from the non-dualistic Shaivite tradition of Kashmir, perhaps dating from the 7th century CE. This was a favourite text of Jean Klein and several verses are quoted in the appendix to this book.
