Be Mindful of Mixed Messages

Sometimes we can accept that we are good at one thing and lack confidence in another. Sometimes we believe in ourselves at the start, only to fall victim to our doubts later on the journey. Often this happens when we are getting close to our goals. We doubt ourselves just as we are ready to cross the finish line. This is normal. We can push down the feelings of self-doubt for only so long and then self-sabotage kicks in and we are back to the feeling that we can’t do it. Pushing through and remembering past successes is a good way to remind ourselves that we can do it.

Everyone’s pain point is unique, and pain can compel the sufferer to seek help or embrace change when it becomes too much to bear. Those dealing with imposter syndrome may continue with the status quo for a long time after their choices have become uncomfortable. For some, life might well be uncomfortable, but they’re convinced they can’t be fixed and aren't prepared to change.

I know a thing or two about this. I didn’t wait until I was thirty-three to pass my driving test because I was lazy. I worried about failing. I worried I might be one of those people who was still trying to pass after fifty tests, the people they make documentaries about. Thankfully, it was only five!

The concern that we will be the only one who can’t do it can infect our thinking so much that it stops us from even trying. Some students get so stressed in exams that their minds go blank and they can’t find the answers to the questions even though they have learned them. Self-sabotage is real and yet we rarely realize that we are doing it.
